By Clem Sunter and Mitch Ilsbury
Clem Sunter is the father of Scenario Planning in South Africa and his Mind of a Fox series of books provide excellent insight into this vital tool for financial advisers. I read this book over the weekend, and it is an excelllect addition to this series and provides some insights on how to use sceario plans as an adviser or observer of current affairs and possible future scenarios.
I asked Copilot to provide a short summary of the new book:
“Thinking the Future” by Clem Sunter and Mitch Ilbury is a guide to making better decisions by adopting a futurist mindset. The authors, both scenario specialists, emphasize the importance of flexibility and adaptability in decision-making, likening it to “thinking like a fox” to navigate a complex and interconnected world
The book challenges the traditional self-help notion that sheer determination can shape the future, advocating instead for a dynamic approach that prepares for multiple possible outcomes. It highlights the pitfalls of overemphasizing accuracy in predictions and stresses the value of a robust decision-making process.
Key themes include:
- Scenario Planning: Developing multiple scenarios to anticipate various future possibilities.
- Cognitive Flexibility: Avoiding cognitive traps and remaining open to new information and perspectives.
- Strategic Intelligence: Using insights from history’s greatest thinkers to inform modern decision-making3.
Overall, the book aims to equip readers with the tools to think constructively about the future, manage risks, and seize opportunities in an unpredictable world
